Now in retirement in the Port of Long Beach, the "Stateliest Ship Afloat" plays host to tourists, travelers—and more than six hundred spirits that roam her halls and passageways.

IN October 1967, 26-year-old Mary Sievier set off to ride to India on a 175cc BSA Bantam motorbike. She reached India and then kept going. She rode around the world, taking nine years, making her the first British woman to make the journey alone.In 2021 she sat down with a film-maker and told her story and these eight episodes make up the uncut audio recording from that film. The Land of Little Rain by Mary Hunter Austin, first published in 1903, contains a series of interrelated essays about the American Southwest. A theme of environmental conservation and a philosophy of regional culture loosely link the narratives. The first essay covers the "Country of Lost Borders," an area between Death Valley and the High Sierras. In "Water Trails of the Ceriso", the author describes the many animals that travel along the trails, including coyotes and quails. "The Scavengers" deals with carrion feeders like buzzards and crows.

There are invaluable historical artifacts: three marble arches with Greek epigraphs. The arches were made in Constantinople, between the 5th and the 6th centuries. Based on "Travels in West Africa" by Mary Kingsley, this is the account of a Victorian lady's journeys up the rivers of West Africa in the 1890s. AUTHOR: Mary Kingsley was born in 1862. She was trapped by the conventions of her time until her parents died but then, with an income of £500, she was free to travel and in 1893 went to Africa.
