Julian of Norwich (c. November 8, 1342 – c. 1416) is celebrated as one of the most profound English mystics. Although much about her life remains a mystery, her writings continue to resonate through the ages. The name Julian itself is derived from the Church of St Julian in Norwich, where she lived as an anchoress in a cell adjacent to the church. In 1144 the mutilated body of William of Norwich, a young apprentice leatherworker, was found abandoned outside the city's walls. The boy bore disturbing signs of torture, and a story spread that it was a ritual murder, performed by Jews, in imitation of the Crucifixion as a mockery of Christianity. The outline of William's tale eventually gained currency far beyond Norwich, and the idea that Jews engaged in ritual murder became firmly rooted in the European imagination.

On May 8, 1373, 30-year-old Julian of Norwich, sick and near death, had a series of visions of Christ. In these 16 visions she learnt about God's loving nature. God in Julian's visions was not angry and wrathful. Instead, the three properties of God were presented as life, love and light, and all of His creation was good, including his servant, man. In Julian's version, Man is not to blame for his sin; instead it is something that he must experience and overcome in his spiritual journey with God.

Revelations of Divine Love is a classic work of medieval Christian mysticism. Dame Julian of Norwich received these visions in 1373, at the age of 30. It appears from her writings that she was born in 1343 and died after 1416. The visions appeared to her over two nights when she was gravely ill. After her miraculous recovery, she described and reflected upon the 16 visions. Her theology is one of love and mercy, which has inspired and comforted many believers down the ages.

A classic work of English mysticism, Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love is an account of 16 divine visions and her meditations on them. She puts forth her ideas of God as a lover or divine love. Julian's revelations, experienced while suffering from a serious illness, may be dismissed as simple hallucinations or could be regarded as true divine visions from God. Regardless of what one might believe, "Revelations of Divine Love" is an important historical work of Christian theology.
