Dwa lata później obiekt znika w tajemniczej anomalii, znajdującej się pomiędzy Marsem i Jowiszem. Wkrótce przybywają następne okręty obcych. Wysłane ich tropem ziemskie sondy badawcze odkrywają w tym rejonie przejście, prowadzące do odległego o dziesięć lat świetlnych układu gwiezdnego Epsilon Eridani, zamieszkałego przez rasę Skun.

Zagrożenie nadciąga jednak nie tylko z wysokiej orbity. W stronę planety wciąż dryfuje wrak Oumuamua, w którego zniszczonej sterowni dwie istoty, organiczna i wirtualna, wspólnie opracowują okrutny plan eksterminacji swych ciemiężycieli. Zdestabilizowana politycznie, odcięta od głównych źródeł zaopatrzenia i coraz słabsza militarnie ludzka kolonia z ponurą determinacją przygotowuje się do decydującego starcia.
