Harvey Bernard Milk (May 22, 1930-November 27, 1978), born in Woodmere, NY, was a US Navy veteran, businessman, and Democrat politician who, on November 8, 1977, became the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. A year later, on November 27, 1978, Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by disgruntled former City Supervisor Dan White in the offices of San Francisco's City Hall. Huey Pierce Long Jr. (August 30, 1893-September 10, 1935), nicknamed "The Kingfish", was an American politician who served as the 40th governor of Louisiana from 1928 to 1932 and as a United States senator from 1932 until his assassination in 1935. He was a left-wing populist member of the Democratic Party and rose to national prominence during the Great Depression for his vocal criticism of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal, which Long deemed insufficiently radical. The following recording is of Long’s 1935 radio broadcast speech, The St. Vitus Dance Government.

Joseph Patrick Kennedy (September 6, 1888 - November 18, 1969) was an American businessman, philanthropist, and politician. He was the patriarch of the Irish-American Kennedy family, which included President John F. Kennedy, U.S. Attorney General and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and longtime Senator Ted Kennedy. The following recording includes three audio clips: Kennedy's arrival in Britain (1938), his praise for the resiliency of the British people (1940), and a speech he gave in favor for keeping America out of World War II (1941).

Leon Trotsky was a communist theorist, prolific writer, and leader in the 1917 Russian Revolution. Josef Stalin (speaking Russian) was the General Secretary of the Russian Communist Party and a key leader in World War II.

The Education of Henry Adams is among the oddest and most enlightening books in American literature. Henry Adams was the grandson of a president and the great-grandson of another one. He was also the son of the American Ambassador to England, and his secretery. As such he rubbed elbows, literally, with Presidents from Abraham Lincoln to Theodore Roosevelt and with many of the great figures of his time.

When running as the third-party Progressive (Bull Moose) candidate for president of the United States in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt recorded a number of campaign speeches. Represented here are all of the cylinder recordings he made for the Edison Company in August of 1912, including "The Progressive Covenant with the People," "The Right of the People to Rule," "The Farmer and the Businessman," and "Social and Industrial Justice."

Margaret Hilda Thatcher (October 13, 1925 - April 8, 2013) was a British Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She was the first female British prime minister and the longest-serving of the 20th century. A Soviet journalist dubbed her the "Iron Lady", a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style. Gary Warren Hart (né Hartpence; born November 28, 1936) is an American politician, diplomat, and lawyer. He was the front-runner for the 1984 and 1988 Democratic presidential nominations, until in 1988, he dropped out amid revelations of extramarital affairs. He represented Colorado in the United States Senate from 1975 to 1987. The following is Hart's public announcement on May 8, 1987 that he was ending his presidential campaign.

Archibald James Carey Jr. (February 29, 1908-April 20, 1981) was an American lawyer, judge, politician, diplomat, and clergyman from the South Side of Chicago. He was elected as a city alderman and served for eight years. In 1957, he was appointed by President Dwight Eisenhower as chair of his committee on government employment policy, which worked to reduce racial discrimination. The following is a speech Carey gave at the 1952 Republican National Convention.
