What is it that makes humans human? As science and technology challenge the boundaries between life and nonlife, between organic and inorganic, this ancient question is more timely than ever. Liberal democracy in America has always contained contradictions—most notably, a noble but abstract commitment to freedom, justice, and equality that, tragically, has seldom been realized in practice. While these contradictions have caused dissent and even violence, there was always an underlying and evolving solidarity drawn from the cultural resources of America’s “hybrid Enlightenment”. James Davison Hunter, who introduced the concept of “culture wars” 30 years ago, tells us in this new book that those historic sources of national solidarity have now largely dissolved.

Since the Nakba in 1948, countless Palestinians have been permanently displaced from their country due to the establishment of the state of Israel on Palestinian land. Since the conflict in October 2023, 36,171 Palestinians have been killed as of May 29, 2024 due to the genocide in Gaza, with approximately 1.7 million people being displaced (Source: UN OCHA). On February 28, the Centre for Human Rights Research held a virtual panel on Solidarities and Connections with Palestine through a Zoom webinar.
