The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle was the second of Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle books published in 1922. This novel takes us to the different adventures of Doctor Dolittle in the Mediterranean, South America, and even under the sea. Doctor Dolittle meets Tommy Stubbins, the young son of the local cobbler, who becomes his new assistant. Tommy learns how to speak animal languages and becomes involved in the Doctor's quest to find Long Arrow, the greatest naturalist in the world.

No one loves and understands animals like the eccentric 19th-century physician Dr. Dolittle, who masters animal language with the help of Polynesia the parrot. After his human patients desert him, the kind-hearted doctor finds his calling in practicing animal medicine, and his fame spreads far and wide. When a terrible epidemic breaks out among monkeys in Africa, Dr. Dolittle sets out to save them, accompanied by some of his favorite pets.

In this follow-up to the first of Hugh the series though, Lofting assigns the starring role to Tommy Stubbins who is now an "old man". He recalls how he met Doctor John Dolittle and the many adventures they shared. The Doctor is working on learning the language of the Shellfish and their adventures take them from a trial for murder to adventures on the high seas, culminating in their arrival on Spidermonkey Island. Then comes a war between the native tribes, Dolittle being crowned King, the arrival of the Great Glass Sea-Snail and their eventual return to Puddleby-on-the-Marsh.

The good Doctor Dolittle, accompanied by his devoted animal friends, sets sail once again. This time it is a voyage of discovery, to learn the secret of the Shellfish language, and to teach Tommy Stubbins, the Doctor's young protege, all there is to know about animals and their languages. Choosing their destination by opening an atlas, closing their eyes, and touching the page with a pencil, they set off on the most amazing voyage.

Dr. John Thiessen ist Prediger, Dschungelmissionar, Weltreisender und dazu ein Freund der Kinder. Er wurde in Indonesien geboren und hat viel erlebt in Dschungel und Urwald. Auf seiner ersten Platte Unterwegs mit Dr. Thiessen schildert er das geheimnisvolle Leben des Urwalds. Besonderes Vergnügen bereiten den Kindern die Stimmen der wilden Tiere, die Dr. Thiessen täuschend ähnlich nachahmt. Außerdem erzählt Dr. Thiessen auf dieser Platte drei äußerst spannende Erlebnisse aus der Mission. Der Wetzlarer Kinderchor mit Peter van Woerden singt dazu frisch und fröhlich die passenden Lieder.

Die Kinder der Tagesgruppe, allen voran Karla Mümmel, sind ein wenig ängstlich, da Zahnarzt Dr. Kroko seinen Besuch im Kindergarten angekündigt hat. Sein Plan ist es, die Zähne aller Kinder zu untersuchen. Als Paul und Paula davon erfahren, setzen sie alles daran, sich intensiv dem Zähneputzen zu widmen. Die beiden Zwillinge nehmen es normalerweise nicht so genau mit der täglichen Zahnpflege.

Das Abenteuer geht weiter – Kali das Erzähl-Kamel, Sem der Esel und Bruni die Goldfischdame sind weiterhin auf dem Weg zum Mittelmeer, um dort für Bruni ein Schiff zu finden, welches sie zurück zu Jörn auf dessen Kutter bringen soll, nachdem sie bei einem Sturm über Bord gegangen ist, … da war doch schon mal jemand, der bei einem Sturm ins Meer gefallen ist … und Kali beginnt zu erzählen von Jona und dem Wal und wie sein Ur-Ur-Ur-Ur-Ur-Ur-Ur-Großvater Kali Babba das miterlebte. Klar, Wale sind groß und auch Jörns Kutter sollte besser nicht auf einen Wal treffen.
