Anne Catherine Emmerich was born in Germany in 1774. As a child she believed that angels, saints, and the Holy Family visited and talked with her as she worked in the fields. At twenty-four, she had her first mystic vision of the sufferings of Christ, accompanied by stigmata and bleeding as if from the crown of thorns. At twenty-nine, she became an Augustinian nun and continued to have visions and stigmata. In her visions, she recounted scenes from the life of Christ, which she seemed to have witnessed.

Comme l'Évangile selon Marc, son texte se présente comme une biographie de Jésus de Nazareth. La généalogie de Jésus, dans l'évangile selon Saint Luc, est une généalogie ascendante, de Jésus à Adam, père de l'humanité, et passant par Nathan, autre fils de David.

L'"Évangile selon Matthieu" est le premier des quatre évangiles canoniques que contient le Nouveau Testament. Il est aussi le tout premier livre du Nouveau Testament. Ce livre a été attribué pendant de longs siècles à l'apôtre Matthieu, le collecteur d'impôts devenu disciple de Jésus de Nazareth. L'"Évangile selon Matthieu" contient le sermon sur la montagne. La portion la mieux connue est probablement celle des Béatitudes, qui se trouve au début de la section. Il contient aussi la prière du Notre Père et les injonctions contre la loi du talion.

L'"Évangile selon Marc" forme, avec les trois autres évangiles, le cœur du Nouveau Testament, la partie la plus récente de la Bible chrétienne. Dès le prologue, Jésus nous est présenté comme le Messie, le Fils de Dieu. Poussé au désert par l'Esprit, Jésus se prépare à affronter son ennemi principal : Satan. Mais les anges le servent, et les bêtes sont témoins. Le Nouveau Souverain s'avance souverainement dans sa patrie, la Galilée. Il désigne ses premiers disciples, qui seront ses ministres. Il chasse les démons. Il parcourt toute la Galilée.
