This book was the inspiration for an enormous achievement. The Peoples Palace for the entertainment and instruction of the working class was opened in the East End in 1887, five years after the book was published. It had changed peoples lives and was an incredible support for those who had previously no art gallery, theatre, library, concert hall or gymnasium.

This captivating work explores the intricate history of the medieval Popes, set against the rich backdrop of Rome and its vibrant civilization. The author skillfully intertwines these two narratives to create an authentic depiction of what Rome represented during the Middle Ages. Volume one delves into the state of the Roman Empire at the close of the fourth century, the climactic battle between Paganism and Christianity (AD 394), the emergence of the Primacy of Peter, and the churchs enduring conflict with Arianism.

Story0
Walter Besant was a novelist and historian, and his topographical and historical writings were probably best known through the detailed 10-volume Survey of London published after his death. This earlier single volume covers, in less depth, the whole period from prehistory until the 19th century. The book appears originally to have been written for boys, and, indeed, the chapters are called "Lessons". However, it is a very listenable history and provides a fascinating insight into both London's past and the government of the city at the time the book was written in 1894.
