El cuento sucede en un castillo de un rico terrateniente, a donde ha llegado sin así planearlo un viejo amigo, al que no veía hacia mucho, el general Browne, recién llegado de América, en donde había participado en la guerra con Estados Unidos, camino a algún lugar se decide a visitar el Castillo que le ha llamado la atención, y se encuentra con su amigo, que le invita a hospedarse con él, ya que está celebrando una fiesta con muchos visitantes, pero no tiene para él más que una recámara alejada de la casa, a la que llaman "La cámara de los tapices".
