Ein Glücksfall für die Historiker: Harry Graf Kessler (1868–1937) beschrieb das Zeitgeschehen der Jahre 1933-37. Seine Berichterstattungen geben präzise Einblicke in die politischen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen und sind Zeugnisse vom Leben und Denken eines aufgeklärten europäischen Intellektuellen. Kessler floh schon im März 1933 nach Frankreich und Spanien. Im Jahr 1935 wurden seine Bücher öffentlich verbrannt, aber bis zu seinem Tod führte er Gespräche mit Zeitgenossen und hielt die politischen Ereignisse akribisch fest. Kesslers Berichte sind ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Geschichtsschreibung dieser Zeit.

Der Brief an den Vater ist ein 1919 verfasster, niemals abgeschickter Brief Franz Kafkas an seinen Vater. Er wurde postum 1952 in der Neuen Rundschau veröffentlicht und ist ein bevorzugter Text für psychoanalytische und biographische Studien über Kafka.

Etwa 470 Briefe umfasst der Briefwechsel zwischen dem großen Berliner Maler Max Liebermann und dem Direktor der Hamburger Kunsthalle Alfred Lichtwark. Lichtwark, der als einer der Ersten Liebermanns Kunst förderte, hatte einen starken Einfluss auf den Maler. Liebermann wiederum war dem Mentor dankbar für die persönliche Beratung und Freundschaft. Als Liebermann seinen Landsitz in Berlin-Wannsee errichtete, plante er die Gartengestaltung in einer ausführlichen Korrespondenz mit Lichtwark. Er selbst entwickelte für die Gartenlandschaft eine Grundidee und arbeitete sie mit seinem Freund zu einem vielgestaltigen modernen Garten aus.

The Uncommercial Traveller is a collection of literary sketches and reminiscences written by Charles Dickens, published in 1860-1861. In 1859 Dickens founded a new journal called All the Year Round, and the "Uncommercial Traveller" articles would be among his main contributions. He seems to have chosen the title and persona of the Uncommercial Traveller as a result of a speech he gave on 22 December 1859 to the Commercial Travellers' School London in his role as honorary chairman and treasurer.

De Profundis is a 50,000-word letter written by Oscar Wilde during his imprisonment in Reading Gaol, to Lord Alfred Douglas, his lover. Wilde wrote the letter between January and March 1897; he was not allowed to send it, but took it with him upon release. In it he repudiates Lord Alfred for what Wilde finally sees as his arrogance and vanity; he had not forgotten Douglas's remark, when he was ill, "When you are not on your pedestal you are not interesting."
