لعل أصدق وصف لهذا الكتاب أنه يمثل بحق مرآة العصر، فقد تناول فيه «عبد العزيز البشري» بالنقد والتحليل عددًا من أبرز شخصيات عصره في مختلف المجالات؛ كالسياسة، والطب، والفن، والشعر، والاقتصاد. هؤلاء الذين ساهموا في صناعة تاريخ مصر في تلك الحقبة، والذين ما زالوا حتى الآن مادة أساسية للبحث والاستقصاء. ويعكس لنا المؤلف صورة ألمع شخصيات العصر بالنسبة للأدباء والمفكرين، ولا يخفى على القارئ اللبيب الاتجاه السياسي الذي يمثله المؤلف؛ الأمر الذي ظهر جليًّا فى كتابته، حيث أشاد بدور كل من «سعد باشا زغلول» و«مصطفى باشا النحاس».

يتناول تاريخ الثورة الفلسطينية التي اندلعت بين عامي 1936 و1939، وهي مرحلة هامة في مقاومة الانتداب البريطاني والحركة الصهيونية. يركز الكتاب على تطور الأحداث منذ الإضراب العام عام 1936، مروراً بالانتفاضة الشعبية، وصولًا إلى قمع الثورة من قبل القوات البريطانية. ويستعرض الكتاب تماسك الشعب الفلسطيني، على الرغم من عدم تحقيق الهدف النهائي بالتحرير، إلا أن الثورة كانت خطوة مهمة نحو ترسيخ الروح الثورية في نفوس الفلسطينيين.
