Der Nanga Parbat liegt im Himalaja-Massiv. Er ist der neunthöchste Berg der Erde, seine Steilwand an der Südseite mit 4500 Metern die höchste Fels- und Eiswand der Welt. Reinhold Messner bezeichnet ihn als seinen Schicksalsberg, da er an ihm 1970 seinen Bruder Günther bei einer gemeinsamen Tour verlor. Er berichtet von seiner vergeblichen Suche nach dem Bruder, von den grauenvollen Stunden der Verzweiflung und zunehmender physischer Erschöpfung.
