Juana I la Loca (1479-1555), reina de Castilla de 1504 a 1555, era hija de los Reyes Católicos. De acuerdo con la política exterior de su padre, contrajo matrimonio con el archiduque Felipe el Hermoso, primogénito de Maximiliano I. En 1504 aparecieron los primeros síntomas de enajenación mental, que se acentuaron a la muerte de su esposo en 1506. Su vida estuvo llena de intrigas y luchas por el poder. Esta referencia, puramente histórica, no explica el extraordinario y dramático destino de esta reina, a quien el pueblo llano tituló «doña Juana la Loca de amor».
