Cosa significa vivere fuori dal nostro paese per portare aiuto alle persone più deboli del mondo, testimoniando nel concreto il proprio ideale di giustizia sociale? Ecco le storie di vita quotidiana, di emozioni, di gioie, di successi, vissute dagli operatori umanitari italiani di Medici senza frontiere, raccontate attraverso le loro lettere e i loro racconti. Diversi sono gli scenari ma comuni molti dei riferimenti: l'ingiustizia, la mancanza di strutture sanitarie minimali o di acqua, la morte per denutrizione.

In Siria, alle porte di Damasco, la città ribelle di Daraya è alle corde per l'assedio implacabile dell'esercito di Assad. Un inferno che dura da quattro lunghissimi anni, scanditi dai bombardamenti con i barili esplosivi, gli attacchi con il gas, la morsa della fame che stringe gli abitanti isolati. Per reagire alla violenza del regime, alla mortificazione emotiva, al senso di sconfitta e terrore che pervade la popolazione, quaranta giovani volontari decidono di dedicarsi a cercare e mettere al sicuro migliaia di libri finiti sotto le macerie delle case e delle scuole.

Jelinek traveled to the Deep South to volunteer as a civil rights lawyer during his three-week summer vacation in 1965. He stayed for three years. In White Lawyer, Black Power, Jelinek recounts the battles he fought in defense of militant civil rights activists and rural African Americans, risking his career and his life to further the struggle for racial equality.

One of the most important African-American leaders of the 20th century and perhaps the most influential woman in the civil rights movement, Ella Baker (1903-1986) was an activist whose remarkable career spanned 50 years and touched thousands of lives. A gifted grassroots organizer, Baker shunned the spotlight in favor of vital behind-the-scenes work that helped power the Black freedom struggle. 

In his short life, the Guyanese intellectual Walter Rodney emerged as one of the leading thinkers and activists of the anticolonial revolution, leading movements in North America, South America, the African continent, and the Caribbean. In each locale, Rodney found himself a lightning rod for working class Black Power. His deportation catalyzed 20th century Jamaica's most significant rebellion, the 1968 Rodney riots, and his scholarship trained a generation how to think politics at an international scale.

In March 1969, eight young men were indicted by the federal government for conspiracy to incite a riot. Some of them barely knew one another, having come together briefly to protest the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago and the war in Vietnam. First dubbed the "Conspiracy 8" and later the "Chicago 7", the group included firebrands like Abbie Hoffman and Bobby Seale, but also a little-known community activist and social worker named Lee Weiner, who was just as surprised as the rest of the country when his name was called.

This book chronicles the historical eight-day sit-in at Swarthmore College, and the authors also include untold stories about their family backgrounds and their experiences as student activists. They share how friendships, out-of-the-box alliances, and a commitment to moral integrity strengthened them to push through and remain resilient in the face of adversity.
