Im Jahre 1915 begegnete der nach spiritueller Vertiefung strebende Peter Ouspensky in Moskau dem aus Armenien stammenden spirituellen Lehrmeister Georges Gurdjieff. Julien Offray de la Mettrie (1709 - 1751) war zwar Arzt, jedoch auch philosophisch außerordentlich interessiert.
