Il giovane Caravaggio, arrivato da poco a Roma, comincia a lavorare nella bottega di Cavalier d'Arpino, famosissimo pittore tardo-manierista. Si dedica soprattutto a realizzare nature morte, cosa che detesta perché vorrebbe dipingere figure e mettersi alla prova con nuove sfide. Ma il Cavalier d'Arpino, oltre a dipingere, commercia anche in dipinti, soprattutto nel Nord Europa. E la sua bottega ne è piena. Ed è così che Caravaggio adocchia tra i nuovi arrivi una tavoletta di piccolo formato, opera di Hieronymus Bosch. Rappresenta una scena minuziosa e complicata.

Ducato di Milano, 1548. La dominazione spagnola sta devastando la città e il contagio, le malattie sembrano inarrestabili, regna la disperazione. Un unico impulso, in questo mondo allo stremo: sopravvivere. Deve trovare a tutti i costi un libro appena stampato nella lontana Alsazia, in cui è contenuta la prima carta geografica dell'America. Ma nessuno lo deve sapere. Leonardo infatti, invidiosissimo di Colombo, Vespucci e degli altri grandi esploratori, vuole plagiare la carta dell'America e darla alle stampe a suo nome, per fare bella figura con gli amici fiorentini.

Roma, primavera 1501. Salaì, apprendista pittore, scapestrato e sciupafemmine, scrive a un ignoto destinatario lo sgrammaticato resoconto del suo viaggio nell'Urbe. Il giovane è arrivato da Firenze al seguito del patrigno, un vecchio frustrato e squattrinato dalla testa zeppa di strane invenzioni che non funzionano mai: Leonardo da Vinci. Ufficialmente Leonardo è venuto nella Città Santa per studiare dal vivo l'antica architettura romana. In realtà è stato chiamato per un'indagine delicatissima: dovrà scoprire chi sta spargendo voci calunniose e infamanti sul pontefice.
