While intensely attentive to its own tradition, Japanese literature has also embraced the outside world, particularly the influence of China. Beyond this, Japan boasts a powerful literary culture, made up of cultivated reading publics, both aristocratic and bourgeois, literary salons, specialized presses, authoritative judges of talent who cultivated and celebrated particular writers and styles, and a canon consisting of classics. This Very Short Introduction traces the rich history of Japanese literature from its beginnings over a millennium ago to the present day.

The classical poetry of Japan focuses on direct experience of fleeting moments, in total contrast with its Occidental counterpart. These seminal poems were passed down orally, before great collections reassembled works of art spanning several centuries in written form as early as the 8th century, from the Kojiki to the Kokinshu. Later, a number of female writers rose to prominence (Murasaki Shikibu, Sei Shonagon); then in the 17th century, the haiku form became extremely popular, in large part due to the work of Matsuo Bashō, a prolific writer and traveler.

芥川の作品には珍しく、自身の体験をそのまま物語にした中期の作品です。短い物語の中に数多く出てくる「象徴」と「色彩」が見事に描かれています。耳で聴くと、「この作品は五感で味わう作品」

河に浮かぶ死体を嘲笑して見物する群衆を描いた小品。死者への冒涜を怒りながら、衆愚と無縁でない己の内面を冷静にとらえている。いわゆる「啓吉もの」のひとつ。啓吉は菊池寛の分身だ。

山本周五郎の短編の魅力はストーリー転換の妙にあります。読者や聴き手に結末を想像させておいて見事にひっくり返す。それで終わりと思いきや、もう一度転換する。その手法がたっぷり味わえる作品。

主人公である良秀の「芸術の完成のためにはいかなる犠牲も厭わない」姿勢が、芥川自身の芸術至上主義と絡めて論じられますが、そんな難しい事は考えず、純粋に楽しんで欲しい作品。

菊池寛初期の短編小説。京都大学時代の経験も交えて書かれた面白い小説です。エゴイズムに対する辛辣な皮肉も込められた作品でもあります。 京都の疎水の描写も興味深い作品です。
