Die Sicherheit Europas scheint in Gefahr, weil ein wichtiges Staats-Dokument verschwunden ist. Der englische Premierminister sitzt persönlich auf Sherlock Holmes' Sofa, um ihn mit dem Fall zu betrauen. Wenig später erfährt er von der Polizei, daß sein Gastgeber in dieser Nacht auf freiem Feld ermordet wurde. Natürlich gerät Eccles in Verdacht. Nur Sherlock Holmes verfolgt eine ganz andere Spur.

Der Sohn des reichen und angesehenen Duke of Holdernesse ist aus seinem Internat verschwunden. Obwohl es anfangs Hinweise auf eine freiwillige Flucht gibt, deuten alle neu auftauchenden Spuren auf eine Entführung hin. Als der in derselben Nacht verschwundene Deutschlehrer tot aufgefunden wird, steht Sherlock Holmes vor einem wahrhaft kniffligen Problem.

Auf der einsamen Landstraße zwischen Farnham und Chiltern Grange ist die junge, hübsche Miss Violett Smith regelmäßig mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs. Als sie bemerkt, dass sie immer wieder von einem Mann verfolgt wird, bittet sie Sherlock Holmes um Hilfe. Dieser wittert einen interessanten Fall und macht sogleich unliebsame Bekanntschaft mit den Fäusten eines Verehrers seiner Klientin. Er muss herausfinden, warum die verarmte Musiklehrerin eine so begehrte Braut ist.
