Le Security Service ("Service de la sûreté"), communément dénommé MI5 (pour Military Intelligence, section 5) est le service de renseignement responsable de la sécurité intérieure du Royaume-Uni. Il est chargé principalement de produire des renseignements sur les actes de terrorisme, l'espionnage, la prolifération d'armes de destruction massive. Il fait partie des trois principaux services de renseignement et de sécurité britanniques.

Le Mossad, pour "Institut pour les renseignements et les affaires spéciales" en hébreu, est l'une des trois agences de renseignement d'Israël, avec le Shabak (plus connu sous le nom de "Shin Beth", qui est le service de sécurité intérieure) et l'Aman (chargé de la sécurité militaire). Contrairement au gouvernement, au parlement (Knesset), à l'Armée de défense d'Israël (Tsahal) et à l'agence de sécurité intérieure (Shin Bet), les objectifs, la structure et les pouvoirs du Mossad sont exemptés des lois constitutionnelles de l'État.

Enigma est une machine électromécanique portable servant au chiffrement et au déchiffrement de l'information. Elle fut inventée par l'Allemand Arthur Scherbius, reprenant un brevet du Néerlandais Hugo Koch, datant de 1919. Son utilisation la plus célèbre fut celle faite par l'Allemagne nazie et ses alliés, avant et pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la machine étant réputée inviolable selon ses concepteurs.

L'opération Tracer était une opération d'espionnage militaire de la Seconde Guerre mondiale ultra secrète basée à Gibraltar, alors colonie britannique et base militaire. L'origine de cette opération venait du plan allemand pour envahir Gibraltar en 1940, connu sous le nom de code d'opération Félix. L'opération Tracer fut conçu par le contre-amiral John Henry Godfrey, le directeur de la Division du renseignement naval de l'Amirauté britannique.

La National Security Agency (NSA, "Agence nationale de la sécurité") est un organisme gouvernemental du département de la Défense des États-Unis, responsable du renseignement d'origine électromagnétique et de la sécurité des systèmes d'information du gouvernement américain. Contrairement à la CIA, fondée de manière très officielle, la NSA est restée très secrète, et son existence ne fut officiellement reconnue qu'en 1957. Cet épisode fit gagner à la NSA son premier surnom, "No Such Agency" ("Une telle agence n'existe pas") par les journalistes.
