Ce "livre vivant" est un des premiers de la Sainte. Il n'a pas reçu de titre comme tel, en effet, les bibliothécaires de l'Escorial lui en donnèrent un qui nous a été transmis jusqu'à ce jour. De toutes ses œuvres, "La Vida" est la plus longue et Sainte Thérèse se présente à nous comme écrivain. Il s'agit d'un écrit profond, saisissant, d'une révélation authentique de son âme, au point qu'elle-même l'appelle ainsi : mon âme ("Lettre à Luisa de la Cerda", 23 juin 1568, 3 ; V 16, 6 ; V épilogue, 4). Sainte Thérèse a fait dans ce livre un effort systématique - le premier dans l'histoire de la pensée et de la littérature - pour déverser en ces pages la totalité de sa personne, en sorte que les critiques littéraires le considèrent comme le livre le plus personnel de toute la littérature espagnole.
