Валентин Саввич честно признавался, что не считает себя вправе приглашать читателей в "окопы Сталинграда", ибо сам в них не бывал. Но как писатель-историк и участник войны не мог пройти мимо грандиозных событий на великой русской реке.

В истории всех войн, о которых приходилось писать Валентину Саввичу Пикулю, чаще всего его привлекало сплетение стратегии с политикой.

В творческой судьбе Пикуля работа над романом "Нечистая сила" стала очень важным этапом. Но в личной жизни это было катастрофически сложное время, оставившее глубокие, так и на зарубцевавшиеся до конца жизни следы. По рассказам Валентина Саввича, он шел к этому роману более десяти лет.

После выхода сокращенной версии "Нечистой силы" в журнале "Наш современник", состоялось заседание секретариата правления СП РСФСР, где публикация романа была признана ошибочной. По существу, секретариат того времени осуществлял акцию дискредитации не только "Нечистой силы", но и всего творчества В.
