Ci vive Enrico Costa, detto il Francesino, ultimo figlio di una famiglia proprietaria squassata dalla disgrazia; vi soggiorna il grande scrittore Dostoevskij, in cerca di un riparo appartato dall'assillo dei creditori; vi scorrono le esistenze immutabili di tanti, ciascuno col suo soprannome, ciascuno con la smorfia tipica del volto che svela a tutti carattere e destino, ciascuno tormentato da qualcosa di indicibile.

A questo autore dall'inconfondibile vena pessimista e cruda, dall'originale scrittura raffinata e apparentemente naturale, tratta dal linguaggio parlato, ma piena di intrusioni e slanci d'autore, appartiene una serie di romanzi dimenticati, a metà tra il romanzo criminale e il western. A questo filone, quasi sfociante nel dramma antirazzista, che allora furoreggiava in certo cinema e in certo teatro americano alla Tennessee Williams, appartiene "Rossa".

Vibra in questo romanzo una suspense quasi da libro giallo. Il rapporto tra due donne, Sara e Hannane, riunite senza loro volontà da avvenimenti che vengono da lontano. Sara è vittima di un rapimento e Hannane ne diviene la "sorvegliante". Ma si tratta proprio di un rapimento? E qual è il reale ruolo di Hannane nell'evento? L'autrice sembra suggerire che nel DNA della persona esista un richiamo alle sue radici, anche se mai conosciute. È una tesi ardita ma non priva di realismo, nello stesso tempo costruita in maniera credibile e coinvolgente.
