Rollo Martins, scrittore di western dozzinali, subito dopo la guerra va a Vienna, una città in condizioni disperate, divisa in zone sotto il controllo dei quattro Alleati. Lo ha invitato, perché scriva un servizio giornalistico, il suo miglior amico, Harry Lime. Solo che lo trova morto, o almeno partecipa al suo funerale. Qui incontra un funzionario di Scotland Yard, Calloway, il quale, con i suoi sospetti infamanti, sospinge Rollo a indagare sulla fine dell'amico.
