It is the story of a boy growing up in the war-torn Jerusalem of the 40s and 50s in a small apartment crowded with books in 12 languages and relatives speaking nearly as many. His mother and father, both wonderful people, were ill-suited to each other. When Oz was 12 and a half years old, his mother committed suicide - a tragedy that was to change his life. He leaves the constraints of the family and the community of dreamers, scholars, and failed businessmen to join a kibbutz.

In the last years of his life, the writer Amos Oz talked regularly with Shira Hadad, who worked closely with him as the editor of his final novel, Judas. These candid, uninhibited dialogues show a side of Oz that few ever saw. We meet the middle-aged Albert; his wife, whom he has lost to cancer; his prodigal son, who wanders the mountains of Tibet hoping to find himself; and his son's enticing young girlfriend, with whom Albert becomes infatuated and who in turn sleeps with her boyfriend's close friend. In this human profusion is a fever dream of chaos and order, love and eroticism, loyalty and betrayal, and ultimately an extraordinary energy.

Gerusalemme, l’inverno tra la fine del 1959 e l’inizio del 1960. Shemuel Asch decide di rinunciare agli studi universitari – e in particolare alla sua ricerca intitolata Gesù visto dagli ebrei – a causa dell’improvviso dissesto economico che colpisce la sua famiglia e del contemporaneo abbandono da parte della sua ragazza, Yardena. Shemuel è sul punto di lasciare Gerusalemme quando vede un annuncio nella caffetteria dell’università. Vengono offerti alloggio gratis e un modesto stipendio a uno studente di materie umanistiche che sia disposto a tenere compagnia, il pomeriggio, a un anziano disabile di grande cultura.

Una storia di amore e di tenebra è uno scavo profondo e doloroso, onesto e autenticamente commovente, che Oz conduce dentro la sua vita, la sua carriera, e dentro una nazione che nasce da un trauma insanabile, dal tragico addio a un passato irrecuperabile, in un contesto di scontro armato e conflitti. גיבור הספר פנתר במרתף הוא נער המכונה פרופסור, מפני שאינו מפסיק לבדוק מילים, להפוך אותן, להרכיבן ולסדרן מחדש. בימים של חרדה ושל עוינות הדדית הוא מתיידד עם שוטר בריטי תימהוני ומואשם על ידי חבריו בבגידה. בתוך כך הוא מגלה את עצמו מחדש, בודק, מהפך ומרכיב מחדש את עולמו, את יחסו להוריו, לאויב, ולעצמו.

תייר מזדמן שיגיע לכפר הפסטורלי תל אילן יראה בתי-איכרים בני מאה שנה ויותר, ברושים גבוהים, גבעות מוריקות ומטעי פרי. ממש טוסקנה בלב הרי מנשה. אבל מתחת לפני השטח רוחשים סודות וחידות: מישהו חופר בלילות מתחת לבית של פסח הזקן. משהו מסתורי חבוי בחדר השינה של משפחת לוין. ולמה מתווך הנדל"ן נותר נעול במרתף של הסופר המת? כל הסיפורים (מלבד האחרון) בספרו החדש של עמוס עוז מתרחשים בכפר הדמיוני. זהו מקום שנבנה מעלילה לעלילה כמין מקונדו ישראלית - "דמות על" מוחשית, רוטטת ובעלת עוצמה.

אני לא מיסטיקן בהרבה דברים שאחרים נוטים להיות מיסטיקנים. אבל בעניין אחד אני דווקא קצת מיסטיקן: מילה לא תלך לאיבוד אם היא מילה ראויה. היא תשכב כמו זרע בחול הצחיח עשר שנים, חמישים שנה, ואז היא תנבוט," כותב עמוס עוז. מאז פרוץ האינתיפאדה השנייה יש בלבול ומבוכה, התלהמות והקצנה בצד ייאוש ורפיון, בשיח הציבורי הישראלי.

שלוש נובלות מכונסות בקובץ הר העצה הרעה: "הר העצה הרעה", "אדון לוי", "געגועים". המקום, בכל שלושת הסיפורים, הוא ירושלים; הזמן - שלהי תקופת המנדט; וחומר הבעירה של שלושתם הוא הגעגוע. בהר העצה הרעה, על פי המסורת הנוצרית, התכנסה מועצת הכוהנים שהחליטה למסור את ישו לצליבה. לימים נבנה על ההר ארמונו המרהיב של הנציב העליון הבריטי, מוקד המאבק בין השליטים הבריטים לבין היהודים בארץ ישראל.

לגעת במים, לגעת ברוח מספר לכאורה את סיפור חייהם הנפתל, האומלל והמאושר של הזוג אלישע וסטפה פומראנץ. הוא מורה יהודי גאון, היא מורה גם כן ויהודייה.
