Trollope’s only historical novel is set during a rebellion against the Republic established by the French revolution. The rebellion occurred in the west of France, in a region called la Vendée, in 1793. The novel focuses on the leaders of the rebellion and their families – Cathelineau, de Lescure, Larochejaquelin – and to a lesser extent the leaders of the Republic, especially Robespierre. The rather incompetent new Bishop, Dr. Proudie, led by his formidable wife, and ambitious chaplain, Mr. Slope, begin to create turmoil with their desire to shake up the church establishment.

The Duke's Children is the sixth and final audiobook in the Palliser series. Plantagenet Palliser, the Duke of Omnium and former Prime Minister of England, is widowed and wracked by grief.
