"Mi piacciono i toscanismi della lingua di Collodi, adoro la sua voce e le voci dei suoi personaggi, che io provavo ad accennare quando leggevo il racconto ai figlioli prima di addormentarli. Le sue pagine sembrano fatte apposta per la lettura ad alta voce. La voce di Collodi è aspra, concreta, esatta, abrasiva. Ha una musica stupenda, ruvida, e a volte può essere languida e dolcissima, ma sempre accompagnata da un sorrisetto di beffa. It is a darker, more profound version than the popular Pinocchio by Disney, who made the story world-famous with the 1940 animated film. It is filled with absurd puppet-humor and abstract slap-stick—and it is the real version.

Pinocchio has enraptured the hearts of children and adults alike since 1881. Published as a serial in the Giornale per i bambini, or "Children's Magazine", the stories were compiled into one volume in 1883.
