Van Ness was born in Quincy, Illinois, and has been openly gay throughout his life. Joining us at Audible Studios is Alex Bertie, YouTube vlogger of his transgender journey and author of Trans Mission: My Quest to a Beard. When Alex was born, doctors took one look and put an 'F' for female on the birth certificate, based on genitals. When Alex was 15 he realised he was a transgender man, through many years of struggling with identity. After coming out to family and friends, Alex battled the health-care system in order to take male hormones, have surgery, change his name and grow a beard.

Omar El Akkad joins us in the Audible Studios to discuss his debut novel, American War. Having spent 10 years as a journalist reporting on subjects such as the war in Afghanistan and military trials in Guantanamo Bay, Omar has turned his attentions to dystopian fiction in American War. Set in 2074, the novel portrays a world where climate change and political uprisings have transformed everything as we know it - and civil war has broken out in America.

Author of Do No Harm and a memoir titled Admissions, both of which became Sunday Times best sellers, Marsh has documented his career as a neurosurgeon. He spent two decades as senior consultant at St George’s hospital in London, one of the countries largest specialist units for neurosurgery, as well as travelling to Ukraine, Nepal and the United States of America to perform surgeries. Since retiring from full-time work at the NHS, Marsh has been undergoing treatment after receiving a diagnosis of advanced prostate cancer.

Joining us at Audible Studios is high profile human rights and civil liberties barrister Leslie Thomas QC. Thomas was called to the bar in 1988 and has represented some very high-profile cases, including families of the Hillsborough disaster, the family of Mark Duggan, whose death sparked the 2011 London riots, and more recently, the families of the victims of Grenfell Tower. It's clear that Thomas has a passion for supporting the voiceless and vulnerable, and is an expert in claims against the police and other public authorities.
