Ellie swerves to avoid him — and slams head-on into the crash barrier. Days later, Ellie wakes up in hospital — and notices there’s something different. It’s the case Detective Alec Farnham can’t forget. He was the one who found his friend and mentor, DI Lou Catterick, collapsed in a deserted alleyway, her shirt drenched in blood. He was too late. He knows one thing for certain: Lou would never have given up on him. If he can only work out what she was trying to tell him, he knows he’d have the key to cracking the case.

With no forensic evidence and conflicting accounts, Foreman is running out of leads. He's already looking for a second missing boy. Last spotted on a moonlit towpath, and never seen again. At the same time, two children are displaying abilities that defy explanation.
