(Translation: The government sent suited sweet-talkers with a carrot-and-stick approach to kidnap me and set me to reviewing superpowers.) Job Pros: Reviewing powers pays well, and my family stays off the scary people’s list of things-to-kill-today. Job Cons: It comes with a billion strings attached and a side serving of life-and-death situations.

Her parents are spies. To save her from one of their enemies, they gave her to the Ghost Agent Initiative. Thus, the government became her mother, father, and guardian. Now, it’s ready to be teacher as well. Cassandra is happy to learn the survival skills, but she’s less thrilled with the idea of becoming a killer.

In November 1909, thousands of factory workers walked off the job to protest the terrible working conditions in New York City factories. Joining the picket lines was dangerous, with thugs and police officers harassing picketers, but the protests stirred action. Many factory owners finally agreed to some of the workers’ demands and improved conditions. But nothing changed for workers at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, and those workers would pay a high price for the company's dangerous conditions.

To pass the next training phase, Cassandra must kill a certain target, but the line between friend and foe quickly blurs.

(Translation: I get to deal with suited ninnies in stuffy boardrooms, a big fat target on my back, and would-be supervillains who keep popping up like dandelions.) Chasing down bad guys might keep me out of the boardroom (always a plus), but the government head games threaten my sanity and my family.

Name’s Jess. The superhero version is called Just Jess, but I feel like Desperate Jess is a better moniker. My to-do list grew exponentially. (Translation: In addition to my normal duties of reviewing superpowers, I have to find a cure for my sister, solve two power puzzles, and work with Mayor Shady Pants’s misfit crew of Supers.) Saving my sister may involve defying the government overlords and that’s not healthy for other people in my life. If I don’t pull off several miracles, my sister may only be the first of many casualties.
