Le roman "Les Amants étrangers", publié en 1961, tire son origine d'une nouvelle publiée en août 1952 dans la revue "Startling Stories". Il s'agissait du premier essai - et du premier chef-d'œuvre de Philip José Farmer -, qui par son thème audacieux lié à la sexualité fit forte sensation auprès des lecteurs du genre. Histoire d'amour entre un homme en rupture avec l'humanité et une extraterrestre en exil, "Les amants étrangers" met en scène une expédition humaine sur une planète où règnent des conditions de vie proches de la Terre.

Alan Green, space-wrecked on a populated but backward planet, has survived for two years as a slave with no hope of rescue. Then, one day, news of spacemen landing in a remote city gives him his only chance of ever returning home.
