The story follows Esther Greenwood, a bright and ambitious college student who wins a prestigious internship in New York City. What begins as a promising experience quickly unravels as Esther feels increasingly disconnected from the glamorous world around her and begins to spiral into depression. Through her protagonist's descent into mental illness, Plath explores themes of alienation, gender roles, and the suffocating pressures of perfectionism and conformity.

Ariel is a posthumous poetry collection by Sylvia Plath, published in 1965. Written during the final months of her life, the collection captures intense emotional states shaped by her struggles with identity, mental illness, and societal expectations of women. The poems are vivid, confessional, and often unsettling. Plath uses powerful imagery, such as in "Lady Lazarus" and "Daddy," to explore themes of death, rebirth, trauma, and female oppression. Nature, violence, and the body appear throughout, reflecting her internal turmoil and search for liberation.

In this recording, Plath reads "Black Rook in Rainy Weather," "A Secret, Stopped Dead," "A Birthday Present," "November Graveyard," "Medusa," "The Disquieting Muses," "The Stones," and "Cut."
