Harrowhark Nonagesimus, héritière de la Neuvième Maison et Nécromancienne hors pair, doit passer à l'action. L'Empereur a invité les héritiers de chacune de ses loyales maisons pour un grand tournoi. Si elle l'emporte, elle deviendra la servante immortelle et tout e-puissante de la Résurrection, mais chaque nécromancien doit être accompagné de son cavalier. Sans le glaive de Gideon, Harrowhark échouera, et la Neuvième Maison périra...

À bien des égards, Nona semble être une personne ordinaire. Elle vit avec sa famille, va à l'école du quartier et n'aime rien tant que les longues balades sur la plage. Mais Nona n'est pas une jeune fille comme les autres : six mois plus tôt, elle s'est réveillée dans le corps d'une étrangère et elle a peur de devoir le rendre.
