Iakov, fabricant de cercueils et violoniste occasionnel, éprouve une réelle aversion pour le jeune flûtiste juif Rothschild. Marfa, sa femme, évoque les rares instants de bonheur auprès de leur petite fille morte des années auparavant, dont il a oublié jusqu'à l'existence... Seul, il songe à sa vie, gâchée, et tout lui apparaît n'avoir été que perte. Quant à la princesse Véra Gavrilovna, elle a coutume de prendre sa retraite estivale dans un monastère, pour y "soigner son âme".
