A Princess of Mars is the first novel in Edgar Rice Burroughs's famous "Barsoom" science fiction series. John Carter, a Confederate American Civil War veteran is mysteriously transported to Mars, called "Barsoom" by its inhabitants. Carter finds that he has great strength on this planet, due to its lesser gravity. Carter soon falls in among the Tharks, a nomadic tribe of the planet's warlike, four-armed, green inhabitants.

The Gods of Mars begins with John Carter's arrival back on Barsoom (Mars) after a 10-year hiatus, separated from his wife Dejah Thoris, his unborn child, and the Red Martian people of the nation of Helium, whom he has adopted as his own. Unfortunately, Carter materializes in the one place on Barsoom from which nobody is allowed to depart: the Valley Dor, which is the Barsoomian afterlife.

The Lost World is a classic adventure novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Professor George Edward Challenger, Edward Malone, Professor Summerlee, and Lord John Roxton, set out to explore a South America plateau where prehistoric animals, including dinosaurs still live. While investigating the lost world, they are attacked by pterodactyls at a swamp, narrowly miss being killed by dinosaurs, and are captured by a race of ape-men.

The Chessmen of Mars is the fifth novel in the Barsoom Series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Princess Tara, the daughter of John Carter and Dejah Thoris, receives prospective suitors at her father’s court. When Princess Tara meets Prince Jed Gahan from Gathol, she thinks he is a popinjay, but she eventually learns to respect and even love him while fighting the terrible Kaldanes from Banths.

The Warlord of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, is the third book in his famous Barsoom series. This novel continues where The Gods of Mars abruptly ended. John Carter's wife, the princess Dejah Thoris, is imprisoned in the Temple of the Sun by the vile pretender goddess Issus. It is said one has to wait an entire Barsoomian year before the room the prisoner is in revolves back to the entrance.

Written by Edwin A. Abbott, under the pseudonym "a square", Flatland offers pointed observations on the social hierarchy of Victorian culture. However, the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions. Noted science writer Isaac Asimov has described Flatland as "The best introduction one can find into the manner of perceiving dimensions. " As such, Flatland is very popular amongst mathematics, physics, and computer-science students.
