Als 1931 in der Nähe der Kleinstadt Jüterbog bei Berlin ein Zug entgleist und ein anonymer Brief mit einer Geldforderung auftaucht, ruft das die Berliner Kriminalpolizei auf den Plan. Aber Kommissar Gennat und seine Kollegen tappen zunächst im Dunkeln. Nach einigen Monaten entgleist dann in Ungarn der legendäre Orient-Express auf dem Weg nach Wien.
