Joshua Claybourn is an attorney, historian, and author. He writes about American history, law, and public policy, especially Abraham Lincoln's youth and intellectual formation. He is a leading expert on Lincoln's early years in Indiana.
His forthcoming book, Lincoln’s Compass: The Declaration of Independence and the American Idea (2026), argues that Lincoln treated the Declaration as a living moral guide that steered constitutional government and disciplined political power.
Claybourn edited Abraham Lincoln's Wilderness Years: Collected Works of J. Edward Murr (2022). With William Bartelt, he co-edited Abe's Youth: Shaping the Future President (2019), an annotated edition of Lincoln Inquiry papers. He hosts Lincoln Log, a podcast of interviews with leading historians, and appeared as a historian in CNN's Lincoln: Divided We Stand.
Claybourn serves as president of the Abraham Lincoln Association and sits on the board of the Abraham Lincoln Institute.
Outside his Lincoln work, Claybourn edited Our American Story: The Search for a Shared National Narrative (2019). He has written on law, history, and public policy for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today.
