Joshua Claybourn is an attorney, historian, and author who writes about American history, law, and public policy, with particular focus on Abraham Lincoln.
His debut book, Lincoln's Compass: The Declaration of Independence and the American Idea (Bloomsbury, 2026), traces how Lincoln treated the Declaration as a living moral guide, one that steered constitutional government and checked political power. He is also under contract with the University of Illinois Press to co-write, with historian William Bartelt, a comprehensive history of Lincoln's formative years, from birth to age twenty-one. He has previously edited volumes on Lincoln's Indiana years and on American national identity.
Claybourn hosts Lincoln Log, a podcast featuring leading historians, and appeared as a featured historian in CNN's Lincoln: Divided We Stand. He serves as president of the Abraham Lincoln Association and on the board of the Abraham Lincoln Institute. His writing on law, history, and public policy has appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today.
