Joshua Shores is an award-winning author, combat veteran, and former firefighter. His debut memoir, Counting on Death: A Marine Infantryman’s Journal of Survival, Loss, and Redemption, won the 2026 NYC Big Book Award for Military Nonfiction and was named a finalist for the Wisconsin Writers Awards’ Norbert Blei/August Derleth Nonfiction Book Award. The memoir has also been reviewed by Marine Corps University Press in the Journal of Advanced Military Studies.

Shores served four and a half years in the United States Marine Corps, deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. At nineteen, he fought in Ramadi, Iraq, in 2005 with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines. He later served with the first Bravo Company of Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) and deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan. A Purple Heart recipient, he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

Following the Marine Corps, Shores earned a degree in Business Management from the University of Wisconsin–Stout, graduating cum laude. He went on to serve as a firefighter before retiring from the fire service after being injured on a fire scene. He has since worked as an entrepreneur, business owner, and public speaker.

Shores lives in Wisconsin with his family. Through his writing and speaking, he examines combat, leadership, loss, moral injury, and the difficult transition from war to life afterward.
