Lewis R. Gordon is an academic, public intellectual, musician, and chef. He teaches at the University of Connecticut in the United States, where he is Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Global Affairs and Head of the Philosophy Department. He lectures and is involved in political and artistic projects across the globe and holds appointments at universities and institutes in France, India, Jamaica, and South Africa. He is also Honorary President of the Global Center for Advanced Studies, Distinguished Scholar at The Most Honourable PJ Patterson Centre for Africa-Caribbean Advocacy at The University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica, and Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute of African and Afro-Diaspora Studies in Chengdu, China. His many books include What Fanon Said: A Philosophical Introduction to His Life and Thought (Fordham UP, Hurst, and Wits UP, 2015; with translations in Chinese and Swedish) and more recently, Freedom, Justice, and Decolonization (Routledge, 2021); Fear of Black Consciousness (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux and Penguin Books, 2022; with translations in German by Ullstein Verlag and in Portuguese by Penguin-Portugal and Todavia); Black Existentialism and Decolonizing Knowledge: Writings of Lewis R. Gordon (Bloomsbury, 2023); and the Thirtieth Anniversary edition of his first book Bad Faith and Antiblack Racism (Humanity Classics/Bloomsbury, 2025), which features a foreword by Mabogo P. More and Afterwords by Jacqueline Martinez and Paget Henry. The year 2025 also marked the thirtieth anniversary of his second book, Fanon and the Crisis of European Man (Routledge), whose second edition is in progress with commentaries from a global community of critics. His accolades include the 2022 Eminent Scholar Award from the International Studies Association Gordon is an Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
