A Beloved Classic from the Queen of the Regency Romance

A fiery debutante. An ill-tempered bachelor. A romance for the ages.

Arabella, the daughter of an impoverished country parson, dreams of a new life in London. But her beauty and charm will only get her so far - and when Arabella embarks on her first London season armed with nothing but a benevolent godmother and her own notoriously short temper, she quickly runs afoul of Robert Beaumaris.

He's the most eligible bachelor of the day, with a personality as strong and combative as hers - and Arabella cannot abide him thinking of her as just another pretty girl after his wealth. So she allows herself to be provoked into a game of deception - one that could have unexpected consequences....

Arabella is a rich, dashing romance from Georgette Heyer, the legendary creator of the beloved Regency romance genre.

Exemplary narration

I was not surprised that Gemma Whelan, an actress I admire, read this delightful story so beautifully. Heyer"s regency romances are far better than mere love stories. There is laugh out loud humour, accurate historical detail and cleverly constructed plots albeit with the inevitable happy ending.

Arghh... Why, oh why give the hero's name...

...such an utterly unnecessary - and plain wrong - French pronunciation!! I'd never noticed before quite how many times Mr Beaumaris' name is mentioned, but it clangs right the way through to the end of the book. if you can live with that and one or two other odd glitches, then a good reading of a typically good story

Entertaining

One of my favourite Georgette Heyer’s. Quite well narrated marred by several mispronunciations which were irritating.

Narration Nightmare

This is one of my favourite Georgette Heyer novels but it was seriously marred by the pseudo-plummy narration which set my teeth on edge, particularly when the name 'Beaumaris' was mentioned (which was a lot)!

Flat performance and the miss pronunciation!!

I love this story, but this performance was flat. The French beau - Marie instead of Beaumaris just grated on me. Please bring back the older version!!!

Appalling narration

The narrator ruined this for me by her irritating insistence on trying to pronounce Beaumaris in french instead of anglicising it. She also achieved the impossible, rendering the heroin utterly insipid. Guaranteed to promote sleep!

Good narration overall

Very good intonation and narration overall by Gemma Whelan. Beaumaris and phaeton were mispronounced but otherwise the narration was excellent and so much better than most other narrators of Georgette Heyer's novels on Audible. The best narrators of GH are first Richard Armitage and second Gemma Whelan.

Terrible naration - pronunciation of Beaumaris

I cannot get past the narrator's pronunciation of 'Beaumaris'. I did read other reviews but had not realised it would be so intrusive and seems to be in every other paragraph.
Many years since I last read this one and think I am just too old to appreciate Arabella - she just annoys me.

Delightful as expected!

Straight 10 hours and so of unadulterated pleasure. How we have forgotten the chaste and innocent magic of wooing and being wooed. Refreshing and amusing, she charms you with her characters.

an Excellent reader.

Georgette Heuer is both delightful and predictable. No violence. no crucify, perfect escapism into a comedy of errors. Perfectly read.

Pure delight!

Arabella is one of my favourite books by Georgette Heyer and I’ve read it times without number. It is a feel good book that never fails to lift my spirits. Given how highly I rate it, I was excited when Audible made it available as an audiobook, but also nervous. Would the production do it justice? And the answer is a resounding YES! So do yourself a favour and listen to this book - you won’t be disappointed.

Classic Heyer

No one does Regency romances better. So glad they are available on Audible. I look forward to listening to more.
