Publisher's Summary
When Pentandra got married and took a new job, she knew it would be tough.
Ducal Court Wizard is supposed to be the cushiest of assignments for a mage, full of stipends, laboratories, and expense funds. But when you join the Orphan Duke’s expedition to reclaim, recapture, and restore his shattered realm to health, you have to expect things to be...less cushy.
With the south in full rebellion, the goblins stirring on the northern frontier, and the summer capital being run by a corrupt baron and a gang of thugs, things could be better. But those aren’t the worst of her problems: Pentandra is learning how to live with her new husband, Arborn, while the town is driven to distraction by an incarnate sex goddess who is organizing all of the whores, a mopey spellmonger, a nun addicted to gambling, a prude sent by the queen, undead skulking through the shadows, and a mysterious blind girl shows up in her office claiming to be her new apprentice!
It’s enough to drive any woman mad, but Pentandra is not just any woman...she’s the hope of the Alshari Wilderlands, the woman everyone knows as the Court Wizard!

Minalan is Depressed, Penny comes to the rescue!
Terry Mancour does it again. He gives us something that continues the story while world building, even though Minalan and Sevendor are looking inwards.
Pease, please audible! Make John Lee narrate these beauitful stories faster.

A whole lot of nothing...
When i saw the length, i could barely control my excitement. 35 hours of Minalan, sign me up and throw away the key.
Unfortunately, this book is actually only about 14 hours long.
Let me explain:
The first three hours, set the stage for the book. The next important event doesn't happen until 21 (mind numbing) hours later, at hour around 24. During this time there are countless political meetings and combating insurgents using misdirection. A whole lot of talking, zero to little doing.
When my wife read the book, (shes a skipper), we found that she had 95% of the story, and enjoyed herself, using the above timings. If this was not a book related to Minalan, i would have given up around hour 5-8.
Minalan is not involved.
This book's 14 hours of actual story does advance the spellmonger series, but there are quite a few hoops to jump through.

Boring.
Not sure what is going on with this series, but the last two books have been a bugger to get through. Narrator did a fantastic job as always, but could not make up for the lack of direction this book had . Not sure I'll be buying the next one. The first books in the series are great. And it seems as if the story ended 2 books so.

Worst of the best
I love this series it’s a great one full of good characters and compelling plot. But most of this book is just the last book told from Penny’s perspective. Which would have been more interesting if it wasn’t most of the same material. The end did move the plot forward, a little. But there is not a lot of set up groundwork done for the last book.

Story is not as good as the first few books
I thought the earlier books in the series were better. The story kind of dragged for me.

a great addition if slightly weaker
Performance was solid once again. The more I listen to John Lee the more I realize how impressive his narrative skills are compared to several other narrators I've listened to.
The story itself is hard to pin down. Overall, I enjoyed the different perspective and what went down in the book. I especially enjoyed the many foresights Mancour added towards the end of this book about events far ahead into the series. I have to say I'm pumped to follow the series.
Despite that, the plotline felt odd and decentralized. Mancour doubles down on his unnecessary explanations of things the reader should have hammered into one's head at this point; don't get me wrong, I understand the need to re-explain parts of a story for each new addition to a series, but there were several of these where I wondered where the editor was vacationing for so long. And I swear that I had maybe 5+ occasions where I asked myself, "wait a second. shouldn't [character] already know this?". I actually saw that some readers decided to skip this one.
Though I sort of understand where they're coming from, I would still recommend this to any avid fan of the Spellmonger series. It provides a really neat overlapping of some previous events as well as adding to the main plotline. The character development is fantastic and deserved. And while I couldn't be certain how well Mancour did at developing the thoughts and feelings from a female perspective, I do applaud his attempt at diversifying his narrative.

filling pages
I was really into this story, the production was good as usual and the the narrator is great. That being said i got sick of the nowhere dialogue. I almost returned the last book for that reason but i gave him another chance. The author has started just filling pages to stretch the story. This is simply my opinion.

ok but the weakest since knights magi
nicely performed as always but the story is nonsensical at parts. it's like the story took off and the author is stretching side stories into full length stories. not a bad read but not as good as the earlier stuff.

Surprisingly Boring
What happened?! This series was so great until this book, which centers on Pentandra (sp?) and her administrative adventures of running a magical government. I’m barely getting through it it’s so slow and dry. Narration by John Lee always great of course.

Another filler in the series
I honestly can’t tell whether Mr Mancour is trying to enrich the world he his building with side stories or if he’s just padding with content to earn more money.
If it’s the former then I think he’s failed. This book is turgid and uninspiring and misses the levity of the main story books and the fun action of the war.
If the latter then shame on you and get back on track please!
The author is a decent writer, brings a certain whimsy to his writing that can keep us entertained but is no expert at intricate, surprising plot. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the series, I wouldn’t be on this book if I didn’t but in my humble opinion, he should stick to his strengths.
Don’t try and create a world, write a series that focuses on the war and the action that comes with that. Much more in your wheelhouse!

A must buy!!
Had to buy this even though I've just purchased the kindle version! highly entertaining and the series just keeps growing, no series is as complete and full as the spellmonger series. If your on the fence, just buy it, perfect mix of story and hints of comedy, with splashes of action!

too much angst
books 7,8 and 9 are all aproximately written in the same time frame, with a bit of editing and entwining the 3 tales together into the 3 books so that we didn't keep getting fore knowledge of what is going to happen in books 8 and 9 before we even purchase them, the moans about "filler" in the series would dissappear and the depth and complexity of the tale would make it far more engrossing.
having said that, penny's pointless and irrelevant angst ridden inner monolgue about her mum and ensuing meal with her mum and husband(for about an hour!) drove me to start hitting the skip button multiple times until it had ended, then the argument with ishi toward the end where penny tries to talk the goddess into guiding her maidens to find husbands just kept going round and round in ever decreasing circles! utter drivel and had both segments been removed the story would have been significantly improved even if it made the book 90 minutes shorter.

Boring
This book goes over the events from the previous book but from the perspective of pentandra so we already have some idea of what was going on and frankly it's just pretty uninteresting I'm a good half way through but I'm just going to skip this one I'm afraid I keep getting bored or distracted and either not listening or swapping to music instead.

Chapter 49
I thought that chapter 49 was cut short and finished with a lot of questions that were not answered in the last chapter.
Things like how did they escape the dragon etc

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE SECOND LAST CHAPTER
Firstly, great book!
Secondly, if you plan on reading/listening to the next book, Shadowmage, the second last chapter of this book is roughly a 15 minute summary of the entire book. Shadowmage is a great book with a great story. It is completely ruined if you read/listen to the second last chapter of this book.

A parallel story but still worth your time.
I've read mixed reviews about this book but personally I really enjoyed it.
If you just want the next installment of Minalin and a linear timeline, you'll possibibly be disappointed. But if you want the 'whole' story and more detail on Callidore it's an awesome read. Lots of details, but I like details. Despite the details, I still think it moves a long at a good pace and delivers an in depth story on Pentandra and the goings on in Alshar that provides a great understanding to set you up for book 10.
Books 8 and 9 are definitely worth the read although they do run in a parallel time line as book 7, but I'm so excited to get to 10 now. You'd do yourself a dis-service to skip or skim over.

The first 10 hours
Love the books and story line , but the first 10 hours of this book so bloody boring, for me had to to start skipping thought hoping the book would get better.... overall not as interesting as previous books
