About this listen
Samuel Davies (1723-1761) was an academic, evangelist, Presbyterian minister and poet. He was one of the earliest missionaries to slaves in the British colonies, and a strong advocate for religious freedom. Davies’ sermon, ‘Jesus Christ, the Only Foundation’, was delivered on February 13, 1757.
The sermon is based on Isaiah 28:16-17 and 1 Peter 2:4, 6, which interprets the original as a reference to Jesus Christ. Davies explains the phrase ‘foundation stone’ in great detail, by discussing its properties and its power as a house built upon a rock, in contrast to one built on sand. The foundation is also a precious stone and a stable cornerstone, he contends in this inspiring sermon.
