Samuel Davies was an academic, evangelist, Presbyterian minister and poet. He was one of the earliest missionaries to slaves in the British colonies, and a strong advocate for religious freedom. Davies’ sermon, ‘Jesus Christ, the Only Foundation’, was delivered on February 13, 1757. The sermon is based on Isaiah 28:16-17 and 1 Peter 2:4, 6, which interprets the original as a reference to Jesus Christ. Davies explains the phrase ‘foundation stone’ in great detail, by discussing its properties and its power as a house built upon a rock, in contrast to one built on sand.

The Adventures of a Revolutionary Soldier is the recollections of Joseph Plumb Martin (1760-1850), who in June 1776 enlisted in the Continental Army to fight the English during the American War for Independence when he was only 15 years old. He endured the battles of New York, White Plains, Kipp’s Bay, Redbank, Valley Forge, the siege of Yorktown, and the surrender of Cornwallis.
