Publisher's Summary

Against all odds, Owen Kiskaddon grew from frightened boy to confident youth to trusted officer in the court of Kingfountain - and watched its regent, Severn Argentine, grow ever more ruthless and power-mad. Robbed of his beloved protector, his noble mentor, and his true love, Owen has anticipated the day when the king he fears and reviles, yet loyally serves, will be toppled. Now, as Severn plots a campaign of conquest, the time has come to take action...and Owen's destiny demands that he lead the strike.

Ordered to incite war with a neighboring kingdom, Owen discovers its beautiful, reclusive ruler, whose powerful magic might even exceed his own. Together they mount a daring plot to overthrow the corrupt monarch, crown the rightful heir, and defeat the prophesied curse threatening Kingfountain with wintry death. But Severn's evil is as bottomless as the fabled Deep Fathoms. To keep his ill-gotten throne, he'll gladly spill the blood of enemies and innocents alike.

enjoyed it but recommend reading legends muirwood

As I listened to this book, I wasn't sure how to feel. There were characters who were lost that I felt didn't necessarily have to go or at least not in the manner that it happened as well as another character who shows up and plays a slightly significant part in the story but then whose story line doesn't get resolved by the end of the book.

In fact, this book felt both like an ending to a series and a set up for a new series. Despite this, I still found myself enjoying the story and I'm going to miss them. On a side note, I highly recommend reading the legends of muirwood series first as the ending of this book will have more impact if you know the characters from muirwood.

However, not reading muirwood will not make you miss out on a plot lines, in fact, muirwood only comes into play on the final part. It makes the ending go from "o-okay, I guess that's it.." to "oh dang are you serious?!"

Wraps up the trilogy nicely

Any additional comments?

Satisfying ending to the Kingfountain trilogy which is set 7 years after the second book. Owen is now 24, still serving the increasingly corrupt King Severn, and still broken-hearted from the events in book 2. As Severn grows increasingly more cruel and unstable, Owen is forced to choose between his lifelong loyalty and the rightful king - now a seven year old boy who doesn't know anything about his heritage or even who his parents are.

Owen struggles throughout the book with his various moral choices and ultimately tries to make the choices that will save the kingdom from destruction by the magic of Kingfountain. Lots of plot twists and good characters. Overall I think this book is a bit weaker than the last one though, as there were several loose ends never tied up and also a couple of places where Wheeler is so heavy handed in foreshadowing to the point that it's blatantly obvious what's about to happen. Still, a satisfying ending to a very rich and character-full trilogy; would definitely read (or listen to) other books by the same author.

MARVELLOUS. VERY GOOD CONCLUSION TO A GOOD SERIES!

Excellently written and performed. Th ending was fantastic it tied up all loose ends . I could not imagine how it will end but Mr Jeff Wheeler did it brilliantly. I loved the whole series and intend to listen to the whole series again. Ms. Kate Rudd performed wonderfully with all the different voices for the characters. Most enjoyable.

Enthralling

I am speechless. I didn't think it possible, but this book is better than the last.
( I erroneously stated this was a trilogy- there is one more to follow.)
What I like best of this series is the fact that it is the choices made that determines an individual's path, and that many decisions aren't right or wrong, but the decisions made have consequences.
I plan to gift this series to friends and family.
Kate Rudd is a gifted story teller. I loved listening to her in the Muirwood trilogy, and she was magnificent here.

Alternate History with Magic

Interesting idea - what would have happened if King Richart III had killed Henry Tudor instead of the other way. The names of the main characters are changed but they can be recognized as historical people. There is a strong element of magic which adds to the story. Well written and the reader is excellent.

Fitting End

Loved the trilogy and after waiting on the edge of my seat to read the conclusion I wasn't disappointed. Kate as always provided a great performance to accompany a wonderful story.

What a roller coaster!

The range of emotions that you will feel while reading this chapter of the Kingfountain series is nothing short of breathtaking! I would at one moment find myself at the highest of heights emotionally as the story was unfolding exactly as I wished it would....to the lowest of lows a few short pages later when everything had unraveled. This swing happens multiple times, and on many different levels in this book. The Kingfountain series is one of, if not THE best fantasy series I have ever read. Sure, it's not on as epic of a scale as some, but the story here is so rich and fantastic. Both on an interpersonal level, as well as in regard to the fate of the kingdom. I am consuming this story as quickly as I can, and my appetite is not being bedded down in the least.

Compelling

Once again we jump forward some 6 years. Whereas Owen Kiskaddon (now 24) has grown from a frightened boy into the confident Duke of Westmarch, King Severn has become a tyrant who will do anything to hang on to his power; yet Owen still serves him, so far.

King Severn wishes to marry Kathryn, but cannot do so until he can find a way of disposing of her husband, Eyric.

Lady Elysabeth Victoria Mortimer has married Iago, King of Atabyrion, has two children and has grown to love him, while keeping her friendship with Owen.

Owen finally meets Queen Sinia of Brythonica and is taken aback by her generosity. He is unaware that she has known about him since he was a child and has secretly helped him over the years. She is also very much in love with Owen. Could he finally get over his love for Elysabeth?

We learn what influence the Wizr set will have on events and the prophecy of the Dreadful Deadman will finally be realised.

Good series poorly read

I was driven potty listening to the poor pronunciation of some of the place names. I live in the UK many of the place names are actual places in the UK so I know how things should be pronounced......
Also find narrators style difficult as she tends to put to much emphasis on words such and and, the, have etc which for me means the narration is slow and does not flow as it would if you were reading the text.
I stuck with the series as I enjoyed the story and plot. Will not chose books performed by this narrator in future

Can't stop listening

The authenticity can certainly turn a phrase, and the excellent narration as so much to the flavour of intrigue in an unforgettable journey that tugs on emotion in most unexpected ways.
