The story:

But when his ship crashes into the wastelands outside the capital, it disturbs a far greater enemy, one which has lain dormant under the permafrost since long before the Imperium came to this world and could now threaten the whole sector. Faced with ongoing greenskin raids and keeping an over-enthusiastic novice commissar under control, Cain must rally his men and confront whatever emerges from beneath the rapidly melting ice....

Weakest Installment
Unfortunately "The Last Ditch" is the weakest in the series to date. That's not to say it's a bad book because it's still enjoyable. It just suffers when compared to what has come before. The story is formulaic. Tell me if this sounds familiar: Cain thinks he is dealing with "xenos A" only for his palms to itch and to discover a much more dangerous threat in "xenos B." - this is how a few of the previous books went as well but they benefited from interesting side characters and locations. This story takes place on a boring planet, with boring politicians, and a boring threat. The presentation is top notch as always however.

Weakest installment to date.
It's all right from a performance standard. The story is a little boring and basic. This story feels a little undercooked Mitchell can write better.

Yet another great book
I can't get enough of the commisar's stories, I hope Sandy Mitchell just keeps writing them for as long as Games workshop allows him.

meh - phoning it by this point
same old formulaic stuff. nothing surprising and tbh hard to keep track of what was happening. it would have been better to have the book split into parts as it was hard to keep a grasp as to the timeline

A bit too lazy
Still good but I think the author could have done more with the story instead of relying so heavily on Ciaphas Cain to just say his usual lines all the time. It becomes a bit monotonous and repetitive in the end, especially since there is no hook or twist to the storyline.

Solid Ciaphus Cain adventure
If you made it this far through the Cain series then you know the drill. The voice acting as always was impeccable. The story was good but...... it recycles almost all it's plot from previous Cain books. Still well worth the listen though with clever well-described action, moments of bleak humour and above all Jurgen on a motorbike.
