Brenda has struggled with obesity since early childhood and was morbidly obese throughout most of her adult life. Shortly after giving birth to her fourth child at 28, she was diagnosed with Graves' Disease. Following four years of treatment she was deemed in remission, but the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction due to Graves' disease continued. After another eight years of primary care doctor visits, incomplete lab work, and no explanations for her symptoms she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's at age 40. Six years later she had her thyroid removed due to papillary thyroid cancer. At the age of 50, she was 300 pounds and food binging, suffering with inflammation, exhaustion and depression. She had nurtured a 20 plus year addiction to alcohol binge drinking and a pack a day smoking habit. In July of 2022, her doctor prescribed a GLP-1/GIP medication, Mounjaro, to treat her obesity. Her journey toward health began. At 52, while things aren't always easy as she navigates living with Hashimoto's, hypothyroidism and this new menopausal phase of life, she is joyfully living sober, healthy and free of the shame and guilt that once defined her.
