Hahnemann was curious to why Cinchona bark, China officianalis, treated Malaria. Cinchona bark is high in quinine and we still use pharmaceutical Quinine today and it is synthesized to the drug "Qualaquin" still used today to treat malaria and other conditions.

Hahnemann (1755-1843) had already led a full career as a physician, researcher and educator prior to his developing Homeopathy.

"My sense of duty would not easily allow me to treat the unknown pathological state of my suffering brethren with these unknown medicines. The thought of becoming in this way a murderer or malefactor towards the life of my fellow human beings was most terrible to me, so terrible and disturbing that I wholly gave up my practice in the first years of my married life and occupied myself solely with chemistry and writing." …Hahnemann 1782

He called it homeopathy, by uniting two Greek roots,

homoios meaning "similar," and

pathos meaning "what one feels."

Homeopathy consists of treating sick people with medicines which, in crude (larger) doses, are capable of producing in healthy people symptoms that are similar (homoios), and even stronger, to those of the disease a person is suffering (pathos).

What supports the choice of a remedy are the patients own symptom characteristics of their illness.

For the novice and experienced user of homeopathy choosing a remedy can be difficult. As a result we ofter err and choose incorrectly. This is a very common issue in using homeopathy and leads to many thinking that homeopathy is not a reliable medicine. The patient or practitioner might despair and give up and choose other treatments and worse is they use the possibility of using a useful medicine.

I’ve been teaching the homeopathy simplified course a while now and one of the amazing facts about homeopathy that few people know is remedies are discovered in experimental trials even using the ‘double blind method’ the same as any drug today.

It’s true, volunteers take the medicine not knowing either what it is or if they’ve been given a placebo. The resulting symptoms developed by the majority of participants become the indications of the remedy.
