Through Loritasium, I speak with people at different points after a Master's, a PhD or a postdoc, from those still figuring out what comes next to those who have already started working outside academic research.

We talk openly about the choices they've made, the challenges along the way, and the different paths a life sciences background can open up.

The goal is simple: to give Master's students, PhD candidates and postdocs in life sciences a more realistic view of career transitions, including the uncertainty, additional training and exploration that can be part of the path.

  • A scientist supporting other scientists through podcasting
    Oct 13 2026

For the second episode of the Loritasium podcast, we welcome Stefania, scientist and host of the PhD Grind Podcast.

Through her podcast, Stefania has a simple goal: she wants to help people who are struggling during or after their PhD by sharing honest experiences from interviewees who have been there. On her podcast, they talk about navigating lab cultures, changing countries, dealing with unemployment and transitioning to industry. She has shared these stories across more than 20 episodes.

In this episode, Stefania tells us how a Master’s thesis internship at UNIL turned into a new job as a research assistant in a lab thanks to networking, and how having her own project during that time convinced her that she was a good candidate to pursue a PhD. We also talk about the creation of the podcast, the impact it has had on her, the topics that have resonated most with her listeners, the repercussion of isolation during a PhD and what she plans to do now that she has obtained her PhD and left the university.

  • Starting a career in women's health: Is holding a PhD the only way in?
    Sep 23 2026

Here is the first episode of the Loritasium Podcast!

In this episode, Emma tells us about her journey from a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at EPFL to working in women’s health. She is now a Research & Development Engineer at Rea Diagnostics SA, a startup developing a non-invasive test to identify biomarkers of preterm birth.

We talk about the decision she made not to pursue a PhD after her Master’s degree, and the bold move that led her to her first experience in a startup.

Whether you are a Master’s student or a PhD student, this episode is here to show you that there is no single path to finding your next career opportunity after a degree.

Tune in to hear Emma’s story !

Having options is one thing, but being aware of the full range of possibilities is even better. Through the Loritasium podcast, I hope listeners will gain a better understanding of the professional opportunities that their degree and work experience can open up to them as life sciences students and researchers.
