  • “Knock Out” Psoriasis? Dr. Andy Blauvelt on Treating Completely & the Future of IL-23 Therapy
    Sep 28 2026
What if we could do more than control psoriasis? What if we could change the course of the disease? In this special episode of the Skincredible podcast, our own Dr. Lisa Swanson sits down with dermatologist and psoriasis researcher Dr. Andy Blauvelt for a wide-ranging conversation about where psoriasis treatment is headed. Dr. Blauvelt believes we may be entering a new era of treating the disease early, aggressively, and potentially for long-term remission.Dr. Blauvelt shares his personal connection to psoriasis, beginning with his father’s severe disease and the treatments available before the biologic era, and explains how that experience ultimately helped shape his career in dermatology and psoriasis research. The conversation then turns to one of the most important developments in modern psoriasis care: understanding psoriasis as a systemic inflammatory disease, not simply a condition of the skin.In This Episode, We Discuss:The three simple questions Dr. Blauvelt recommends asking to uncover possible PsA: joint pain, morning stiffness, and heel painThe systemic consequences of psoriasis, including psoriatic arthritis and cardiovascular diseaseWhy Dr. Blauvelt says clinicians should “assume psoriasis sucks” and recognize the significant quality-of-life burden it can createThe relationship between IL-23, IL-17, and resident memory T cells (TRMs) in psoriasisThe groundbreaking “Knockout” study, published in Nature, exploring whether higher-dose IL-23 inhibition can produce deeper and longer-lasting psoriasis clearanceThe remarkable clearance and long-term remission findings from the Knockout studyWhat the study revealed about resident memory T cells and their potential role in psoriasis recurrenceWhy “hit hard, hit early” could become an important concept in the future treatment of psoriasisWhat we can learn from studies of patients with shorter disease durationThe possibility that early, intensive treatment could potentially alter the long-term course of psoriasisWhat the next generation of high-dose, long-acting IL-23 inhibitors could mean for patientsWhy future psoriasis treatments might eventually involve treatment only when disease begins to return, rather than continuous therapyFor Dr. Blauvelt, the future of psoriasis treatment may not simply be about finding better ways to keep patients clear. It may be about understanding the biology of psoriasis well enough to intervene early, eliminate the cells that help drive recurrence, and potentially produce long periods of remission. As he puts it, the goal is to “hit hard, hit early.”KeywordsPsoriasis, Skin condition, Dermatology, Skin health, Chronic inflammation, Autoimmune disease, Inflammatory disease, Patient education, Plaque psoriasis, Guttate psoriasis, Pediatric psoriasis, Palmoplantar psoriasis, Inverse psoriasis, Scalp psoriasis, Nail psoriasis, Eczema-psoriasis overlap, Sebopsoriasis, Red scaly plaques, Silvery scale, Well-demarcated rash, Skin rash, Elbows and knees, Scalp flakes, Dandruff, Armpit rash, Groin rash, Belly button rash, Gluteal cleft, Nail pitting, Geographic tongue, Koebner phenomenon, Skin trauma, Psoriasis vs. eczema, Strep throat, Strep carrier, Psoriasis trigger, Microbiome, Gut health, Microplastics, Climate change, Oxidative stress, Smoking, Alcohol, Stress, Psoriatic arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, High blood pressure, High cholesterol, Heart disease, Cardiovascular disease, Diabetes, Obesity, Liver disease, Anxiety, Depression, Suicidal ideation, Psoriasis treatment, Biologic medication, Systemic therapy, TNF-alpha inhibitors, Humira, Enbrel, Remicade, Stelara, Psoriasis medication, Dermatologist, Rheumatologist, Psoriasis explained, Psoriasis for beginners, Pediatric dermatology, Dermatology podcast, Skin care education, Medical podcast, Psoriasis myths, Living with psoriasis, Psoriasis awarenessLinks, AttachmentsMore about Dr. Blauvelt: https://www.psoriasis.org/staff/andy-blauvelt/ More about the Knockout Study: https://www.psoriasis.org/advance/knockout-study-psoriasis/Treatment episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/skincredible/id1866567434?i=1000790922364YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@weareskincredibleInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/skincrediblepod TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@skincrediblepod X: https://x.com/SkincrediblepodPinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/skincrediblepod/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/skincrediblepod/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/1E9FiVQbFc/?mibextid=wwXIfrSend us Fan MailThe information shared on this podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for personalized medical advice. • “PSO” excited to talk about PSOriasis with Dr. Lisa Swanson
    Sep 14 2026

Psoriasis is more than “just” a skin condition. There’s a lot more to it than red, scaly patches! In this episode of Skincredible, Dr. Lisa Swanson breaks down what psoriasis can look like in both kids and adults, why pediatric cases are increasingly common, and why psoriasis is sometimes mistaken for eczema, fungus, or even dandruff.

She also explores the different types of psoriasis, the surprising connection between psoriasis and other inflammatory conditions, clues that can help distinguish psoriasis from eczema, and why what’s happening beneath the skin may be just as important as what you see on the surface.

Plus, they tackle some common misconceptions—including whether psoriasis is contagious or related to hygiene—and share a few fascinating insights into the role of inflammation, the gut microbiome, and environmental factors.

This episode sets the stage for a deeper dive into psoriasis treatments in the next episode.

  • Tween Skincare: What’s Helpful, What’s Hype, and What’s Harmful?
    Aug 31 2026

Tween Skincare: What’s Helpful, What’s Hype, and What’s Harmful?

The skincare craze has officially reached the tween years and the industry is taking notice. From Sephora Kids and celebrity influencers to colorful products marketed specifically to children, tweens and teens are being encouraged to build elaborate skincare routines long before their skin actually needs them.

In this episode of the Skincredible Podcast, Dr. Lisa Swanson takes a closer look at the tween skincare boom: why it’s happening, who is influencing young consumers, and which products are actually worth using. We discuss social media, “Dr. TikTok,” unrealistic beauty standards, K-beauty and glass skin, peptides, hyaluronic acid, snail mucin, slugging, pimple patches, supplements, retinoids, skin-lightening products, and more.

We also explore the potential harms of over-treating young skin. This includes: irritation, acne, allergic reactions, unnecessary expense, and the growing pressure for kids to “fix” perfectly normal skin.

Being interested in skincare is NOT a bad thing. Dr. Swanson shares how parents and clinicians can support that enthusiasm while focusing on what really matters: protecting the skin barrier, using evidence-based products, avoiding unnecessary treatments, appreciating individuality, and building healthy relationships with appearance and self-care.

Because tweens don’t need a 10-step routine. They need good information, realistic expectations, and permission to be comfortable in their own skin.

  • Eczema Online: Fact vs. Fiction
    Aug 24 2026

What’s Fact vs. Fiction About Eczema?

The internet is full of advice about eczema, from beef tallow and coconut oil to probiotics, elimination diets, supplements, acupuncture, “natural” remedies, and topical steroid withdrawal. But how much of it is actually backed by science?

In this episode of Skincredible, Dr. Lisa Swanson takes a deep dive into the eczema advice she found online and separates what’s supported by evidence from what’s harmless, questionable, expensive, or potentially harmful. She and Ana talk about why misinformation spreads so easily, the limitations of internet searches and AI, and why expertise and an individualized diagnosis still matter. Dr. Swanson also discusses the importance of listening to patients, even when the science isn’t completely settled.

Most importantly, this episode is about finding the balance between evidence-based medicine and compassionate, patient-centered care. Because when it comes to eczema, patients and clinicians are on the same team, and the goal is always to help people live better lives.

  • Dr. Natasha Mesinkovska on Alopecia Areata: Luck Favors the Prepared Mind
    Aug 17 2026

What happens when two dermatologists who have spent years treating alopecia areata sit down and compare notes?

In this special episode of the Skincredible Podcast, Dr. Lisa Swanson welcomes her friend and colleague Dr. Natasha A. Mesinkovska, MD, PhD, an Associate Professor of Dermatology and Vice Chair for Clinical Research at UC Irvine and a nationally recognized expert in hair loss and alopecia areata.

Together, they take a candid look at how the treatment landscape for alopecia areata has transformed—from a time when some patients were told there was little that could be done, to an era of targeted therapies and rapidly expanding options.

They talk about what clinicians have learned from years of clinical trials and treating real patients, why earlier intervention may matter, how to think about treatment when the first approach doesn't work, and some of the questions that still don't have easy answers.

And, of course, they bring plenty of personality to the conversation. If you treat patients with alopecia areata or if you're a patient who is curious about what's out there and some of the science of how it came to be, stay tuned.
