Yoga is a mind, body, soul practice that is at least 5,000 years old. As written in the book, Light on Yoga by B.K.S Iyengar, which I read in this episode, "The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj meaning to bind, join, attach, and yoke, to direct and concentrate one's attention on, to use and apply. It also means union or communion. It is the true union of our will with the will of God. 'It thus means,' says Mahadev Desai in his introduction to the Gita according to Ghandi, 'the yoking of all the powers of body, mind, and soul to God ; it means the disciplining of the intellect, the mind, the emotions, the will, which that Yoga pre-supposes ; it means a poise of the soul which enables one to look at life in all its aspects evenly.'
In this episode I share various types of yoga, my experience and perspective as a yoga teacher, as well as many excerpts from Light on Yoga," that explain the philosophy of yoga and it's parts.
I hope this episode inspires you to explore the practice if it is something you have thought about in the past. I hope it helps you see it as more than a workout or stretch, and instead a practice of discipline and patience that evolves into a journey of self discovery and enlightenment. I hope you see it as something that is for ANY and EVERY body of any shape, size, or ability. There is a practice for you.
