Lawrence is often accused of misogyny, and this story used as evidence against him. The listener cannot be entirely unsympathetic to her plight - Lawrence is too good a writer to let that happen - but her dishonesty has probably ruined two lives, and our feelings are for the husband.

The Garden Party and Other Stories was published in 1922. A collection of fifteen short stories, it explores themes including life and death, gender and family roles, relationships and duty.

Katherine Mansfield was a master of the short story. With characters in psychological struggles resulting in a major life shift or revelation, her style influenced contemporary and friend Virginia Woolf as well as modern authors including Alice Munro. These stories were written between 1920 and 1921, while she was ill with tuberculosis. She died in 1923 at the age of 34. Fifteen stories are included in this recording.

The 15 stories collected in this volume demonstrate the genius of a woman who, in her own short lifetime, was compared to Chekhov. The tales are sensitive revelations of human behavior in ordinary situations. With careful, quiet observation, Mansfield illuminates complicated relationships and profound, often troubling ideas. The Garden Party is a 1922 short story by Katherine Mansfield. It was first published (as The Garden-Party) in three parts in the Saturday Westminster Gazette on 4 and 11 February 1922, and the Weekly Westminster Gazette on 18 February 1922. It later appeared in The Garden Party: and Other Stories. Its luxurious setting is based on Mansfield's childhood home at 133 Tinakori Road (originally numbered 75), the second of three houses in Thorndon, Wellington that her family lived in.
